Ode to my Bestie
As I played with the idea of sending out a virtual shout-out to my
best girlfriend, I kept hearing a classic, orchestral tune in my head,
like something from a cartoon. So I set out to find the tune and the
definition of an ode. I discovered the tune was Vivaldi's Four Seasons,
Spring and there are three types of odes. The Pindaric, named after
the Greek poet Pindar, the Horatian named after Roman poet Horace and
finally the Irregular ode. The Irregular ode retains some of the
elements of the Pindaric or Horatian, like four lined stanzas but
authors have the freedom to experiment. There wasn't a doubt in my mind
as to which ode I would choose to create for my Bestie. This amateur
author is totally loving the freedom to experiment...with her writing
people...with her writing!
So here is my Irregular Ode to my Bestie...I love you chingos (Spanish slang for a lot) Friend!

Ode to My Bestie
We met years ago at a school in the barrio
I bitched about Paul she bitched about Mario.
Our relationships were doomed though we didn't admit
but we knew all along that they weren't worth a shit.
We became very close and made a great team
Our dads even shared the same size inseam.
When I told her Paul wouldn't need a tuxedo
We devised up a plan and we went incognito.
(And that my friends, is what changed my libido!)
I was all alone and I thought I was done
But damn we had fun Summer 2001.
We went to the beach, the lake and Magic Kingdom
And boy did I enjoy my new found freedom.
Fast forward a decade and many tears later
I now have a Diva and a boy we call Gator.
Our friendship has lasted through triumphs and tragedy
And she is in love with a great baby daddy.
(Love you too Compadre!)
She is my Bestie and I love her to pieces
'Cuz she listens to my nonsense about jeans with nice creases.
She has been by my side through thick and through thin
And knows what I mean when I say, "In like Flynn."
Friend,
I thank God for bringing you into my life...this ode could go on and
on. I will have to create Ode to My Bestie II because I didn't include
the day I was christened into your family! Thank you for listening to
my rants, for letting me be a hater when I want to, for loving me and my
children and for always, always, always reminding me to pull myself up
from my bootstraps. Love you chingos!
This is great Cynthia! Thanks for being present when our nieces need you the most!
